WTA: Barty continues high-flying in Wuhan – Muguruza fails

Ashleigh Barty won her first-ever career against a top-5 player.The Australian is in the semi-finals of the WTA Premier 5 tournament in Wuhan after a three-movement thriller against Karolina Pliskova.Garbine Muguruza is defeated by Jelena Ostapenko despite 6:1 in the first round.

After their successes against Agnieszka Radwanska and Johanna Kontakt Ashleigh Barty has managed the next beat of the drum.The world rankings-37.defeated Czech Karolina Pliskova, who was seeded third, 4:6,7:6 (3), 7:6 (2).

Barty missed out on three match points before she made everything clear in the tiebreak of the third set:”I’m just happy that it was enough at the end,”said the 21-year-old after her first class performance.”I focused on my serve games and then did some damage at Karolina’s service”.

In the semi-finals, the former Wimbledon winner of the junior women will meet Yelena Ostapenko.The French Open champion defeated the world’s number one Garbine Muguruza after a weak first set with 1:6,6:3,6:2.

Maria Sakkari provided another surprise.The Greek qualifier will be in the semi-final round of a Premier 5 event for the first time after her 7-6 (2), -7-5 win over Alizé Cornet.There the next French woman is waiting with Caroline Garcia.The world’s No. 20 also prevailed over Ekaterina Makarova after two sets.
