ATP: Despite defeat in Shanghai: Shapovalov sets next milestone
Denis Shapovalov has passed the next mark. The 18-year-old Canadian is in the top 50 of the world ranking for the first time this week.In Shanghai, however, the youngster suffered a slight setback.
Young, younger, Shapovalov: At the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada’s promise became the youngest semi-finalist in the history of the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.A few weeks later, Shapovalov stormed to the next round in Flushing Meadows, becoming the youngest player in 28 years to reach the second week of the US Open.
The talented left-hander is also gaining ground in the ranking.Shapovalov, number 50 in the world since Monday, is the youngest player since Rafael Nadal to break through this barrier. The world number one from Spain had cracked the top 50 in November 2004.
The fact that the way to the top is not a matter of course was made clear to the youngster born in Tel Aviv at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.Wildcard-owner Shapovalov failed 6:7 (3), 3:6 and 0:6 in his opening match against Viktor Troicki (Serbia) despite leading the set.The former Wimbledon winner of the juniors missed the eagerly awaited second round duel against Dominic Thiem.
