WTA: Julia Görges wins last title of the season against Coco Vandeweghe
Julia Görges won the women’s season finale in Zhuhai: The German Fed Cup player defeated Coco Vandeweghe from the USA after a big comeback in two sets.
Turning 2:5 into 7:5: That’s how things are these days for Julia Görges. And if you can also transport this run into the second set of the final of the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, then there will be a sovereign 7:5 and 6:1 victory for the player from the Porsche Team Germany.
What will also bring Julia Görges a new career-high: From Monday on, the German, who has just turned 29, will be ranked 14th in the WTA-World Ranking.
Coco Vandeweghe has a bigger highlight ahead of him in 2017, namely the Fed Cup final in Belarus. The meeting with Julia Görges had already taken place during this year’s campaign, during the all around failed duel in Hawaii. The woman from Regensburg had to give up in the second set. Vandeweghe and Görges had been facing each other in Paris just two years before, when Görges won in Roland Garros in three sets.
Since then, however, Coco Vandeweghe has steadily improved, especially in the athletic and tactical areas. The cooperation with Pat Cash has borne fruit, but not in Wimbledon, where the defeat against Magdalena Rybarikova came.
Julia Görges on the other hand has been relying on the services of coach Michael Geserer and physiotherapist Florian Zitzelsberger for some time now. Loyalty paid off, at the latest in Moscow. Rarely have we seen more honest tears of joy than Julia Görges’ after the match ball against Daria Kasatkina.
And this self-confidence has taken Görges to Zhuhai, defeated in a row Magdalena Rybarikova, Kristina Mladenovic and in the semi-final Anastasija Sevastova. The reward is the next tournament triumph – and 14th place in the world rankings. As the best German player in 2017.
