Tennis: Former coach Schönborn harshly criticises Boris Becker
Former coach Richard Schönborn his former protégé Boris Becker one day after his birthday on 22. He was sharply criticized by the European Parliament on November 11 and accused of lack of grip.
Above all about Becker’s assertion that he was insufficiently promoted by the German Tennis Association as a youngster, the 84-year-old echauffers himself in an open letter in the world:”What made you become Wimbledon winner at the age of 17? Did the good Lord bless you overnight?”
In Schönborn’s eyes, the constant publicity in Becker’s public life has led to a distorted perception of reality:”You have never really assessed yourself, you have taken off, become a megalomaniac, have lost self-control and realistic self-assessment” This has led to Becker losing his roots,”the people who have helped you to get so high know you.
As a former head coach of the DTB, Schönborn was mainly responsible for the youth work in German tennis for 26 years and accompanied Becker and Steffi Graf in their world careers.
