ATP: Nick Kyrgios doesn’t need a coach – not even in 2018

Nick Kyrgios remains true to himself: the 22-year-old Australian will also forego a full-time coach in the new season.

Nick Kyrgios has been travelling around the tennis globe for almost three years now without a permanent coach. Mark Philippoussis and John McEnroe wanted to do it gladly, Sebastian Grosjean was allowed to work at least for a short time – between May and August 2017 the Frenchman acted as part-time coach.

After that, Kyrgios returned to his favourite pastime: he went his own way again. So why change something that you don’t want to change at all?”In the last three years I have almost managed to reach 13th place on my own. I didn’t have a coach. So it will be best if I continue in my own way,”the Australian said in a media round in Brisbane.

Kyrgios continued:”I’m not looking for someone with a big name, but someone I can trust, so far in vain. In general, I realize that I’m not ready for a full-time coach.”

However, he learnt from the mistakes of the previous year. The disappointing second-round finish at the Australian Open 2017 was the logical consequence of an indisputable preparation, Kyrgios said self-critically:”I played too much basketball and did nothing else, that was bad for my body.” In this “off-season” it was different:”I did everything that was possible”.
