WTA: Acapulco: Vögele reaches first WTA final – Tsurenko defeats Gavrilova
Stefanie Vögele from Switzerland made it to the final of the WTA International Tournament in Acapulco for the first time. There she will meet defending champion Lesia Tsurenko on Sunday.
After eight unsuccessful attempts, Stefanie Vögele has finally made it into a WTA final. The former number 42 of the world won in the semi-final against the Swede Rebecca Peterson with 6:4 and 7:6 (5).
“It was a tough match, but I’m glad I won and will be able to play here again tomorrow,”said the 27-year-old after her victory. Vögele was able to take the serve off her opponent twice in the first set, and in the tiebreak of the second set, the world rankings-183 took over. than the stronger one.
In the second semifinal Lesia Tsurenko had only at the end trouble with Daria Gavrilova. The last year’s winner from the Ukraine quickly took the lead with 6-2,5-0 before things got a bit tighter – after match ball number seven, the three-time WTA title holder was finally able to cheer.
Vögele, who eliminated US opener Sloane Stephens on her way to the final, has already had positive experiences against Tsurenko. At the last meeting in 2016 in Katowice, Poland, she was able to defeat the current number 40 in two sets. Tsurenko emerged as the winner of the first duel on tour level in 2013 in’s-Hertogenbosch.
