ATP: Murray back on the court: Smashes for a comeback

Less than three months after his hip surgery, Andy Murray has returned to the training ground. The former world number one is working hard in Nice on his return to the tour.

Out of the gym, onto the tennis court: A few weeks ago Andy Murray had to make do with gym work and Pilates, since last weekend the three-time Grand Slam winner finally has the ball on his racket again.

Together with his trainer Jamie Delgado, fitness coach Matt Little and physiotherapist Shane Annun Murray went to the Mouratoglou Academy in Nice. Video recordings of a training session show how the 30-year-old is working on his overhead ball on a hard court.

Murray could not play a match on the tour after his Wimbledon-out when he lost to Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals. Because conservative treatments of the damaged hip did not lead to the desired result, the Briton finally decided to have surgery after his Australian Open cancellation in January.

Murray has announced his comeback for the end of May at a indoor hard court challenge in Loughborough. The tournament had been specially integrated into the calendar by the English tennis association LTA to make it easier for the double Wimbledon champion to re-enter the tournament. In all likelihood Murray will avoid sand and return to the big stage in time for the grass court season.
