WTA: Weak Kerber reaches Miami quarter-finals with a lot of effort
Former world number one Angelique Kerber made it to the quarter-finals at the WTA tournament in Miami with great difficulty, reaching the last eight at the start of her sixth season.
The tenth seeded Kieler won her round of 16 match against the Chinese qualifier Wang Yafan in 2:51 hours with 6:7 (1), 7:6 (5), 6:3.
In the quarter-finals, the 30-year-old will face US Open winner Sloane Stephens (USA), who won 6-3, 6-4 against Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza (Spain). Kerber, the last German player to remain in the tournament in Miami, lost three of four duels so far against Stephens.
Against Wang, only the world’s number 125, Kerber never really found his way into the game, making mistakes for mistakes and strongly recalling her weak performances in 2017. At 4-5 in the second set, Kerber served against the match loss. Only when the strength of the courageous Chinese diminished in the third movement did Kerber have any advantages.
