ATP: Edberg advises Federer not to use clay court season
As coach Stefan Edberg gave Roger Federer’s game a more offensive touch – but it wasn’t enough for the Swede and the Maestro to achieve a joint triumph with a major.
It’s really astonishing how the tennis fans of these days get a glimpse behind the scenes of the big tournaments – Roger Federer was accompanied by cameras on his way from the Centre Court in Wimbledon to the balcony, where the Swissman presented the winner’s trophy after his success against Marin Cilic, to be seen everywhere on the tennis globe. It is difficult to compare the degree of cordiality with which Federer was embraced by the celebrities present, but Stefan Edberg has in any case been very fond of the Maestro. Like the trophy. No wonder: As coach of Federer, Edberg, himself a double champion on Church Road, failed.
“It was great to see Roger come back after working so hard,”said Edberg in an interview with the portal rediff,”I’m fascinated by how he still manages it all. He’s still motivated, he still loves the game.”
And Federer doesn’t manage to do all this alone:”The most important thing is the support Roger receives from his family and team,”Edberg continues. Everything’s going so well right now, he should just enjoy it. We all know that this cannot go on forever. He just has to tackle one big event after another, year after year, and just see how it works. Because now he can play it in a relaxed manner.”
Stefan Edberg himself ended his career in 1996, measured against today’s standards very early on: at the time of his resignation, the Swede was only 30 years old. Edberg has won six Grand Slam tournaments, the double in Australia, Wimbledon and the US Open. On Sand, Michael Chang was the big stumbling block in Roland Garros’ final in 1989.
Roger Federer’s decision to give up the Aschenplatz tournaments completely in 2017 is something Edberg understands very well. If he decides to give up sand, this is very wise from my point of view, because Roger’s chances of winning the French Open are not very good. and prepare for Wimbledon and the US Open.”
