US Open: Laura Siegemund loses in the first round
Laura Siegemund has clearly missed the second round of the US Open in New York and is still waiting for her first victory at a Grand Slam tournament in two years.
The 30-year-old from Metzingen lost to 20 seeded Japanese Naomi Osaka after 1:18 hours 3:6, 2:6, most recently Siegemund had won a match with one of the four majors in Flushing Meadows in 2016, in May 2017 she tore her cruciate ligament in her right knee. Since then, it has been struggling to catch up with the world’s best, currently occupying 146th place in the WTA ranking.
On Monday Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe/No. 9), Carina Witthöft (Hamburg) and Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) provided a perfect start for the German tennis players in New York.
In the second round on Wednesday, Wimbledon semi-finalist Görges will face Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova, Witthöft will play 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams (USA/No. 17) as well as Maria against Yelena Switolina (Ukraine/No. 7).
