ATP: John McEnroe could beat Serena Williams, but …
Again and again the question about a new fight of the sexes: John McEnroe can’t hear them anymore.
Who, if not the “Commissioner of Tennis”, would be able to stir up the active scene long after his resignation as an active player was announced? Even if those of the opposite sex. And so a few days ago John McEnroe once again presented himself on Australian TV as good enough to still beat Serena Williams. With minor limitations.
“The short answer is: “If I trained really well and worked hard at that moment, I still believe that I could beat them”, McEnroe is quoted in the Schwizer Zeitung Blick. “But I’m getting closer and closer to the point where I can’t.”
However, McEnroe is naturally not interested in an actual showdown with the 23-time Grand Slam winner. Although there would have been no lack of lucrative offers for a re-launch of a gender struggle. “I don’t know why. Go and ask any other players, no idea who,” says McEnroe. “It all started in Australia 20 years ago. When Serena and Venus were 18 and 19 years old, claiming they could play against men and beat them.”
Karsten Braasch, the former German ATP professional, as is well known, had already referred such a request to the realm of fables a long time ago.
