WTA: Doha: Julia Görges is in round 2

Julia Görges has reached the second round at the premier event in Doha. She beat Lucie Safarova in two sets.

Görges won 6-1,7-5 and will play Safarova’s fellow countryman Barbora Strycova on Wednesday afternoon, beating Aleksandra Krunic 6-4,6-4.

Görges’ first-round victory was her first as a top ten player – Görges has been ranked number ten in the WTA ranking since the beginning of the month and is one place behind Angelique Kerber.

At noon Carina Witthöft had already won her opening game against Tatjana Maria. She will also meet the world’s number one Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday afternoon. Kerber had a walk-through in round one and will not enter the tournament until Wednesday – she is expected to play German time against Samantha Stosur in the late afternoon.
