ATP: New York: Anderson wins on black ground – Oswald wins double title

Kevin Anderson has won the serve giants’ duel against Sam Querrey. At the premiere of the New York Open, the top seeded South African kept the upper hand in three sets in the final.

Kevin Anderson seems to be particularly comfortable in the Big Apple. The 2017 U. S. Open finalist had already held his ground against Sam Querrey in Flushing Meadows last September – at the time in the quarter-finals. On the black hard court of the Nassau Coliseum he was now able to match the American in the internal balance sheet (8:8).

After a competitive 4-6,6-3,7-6 (1) win, Anderson was able to celebrate the fourth ATP title of his career. In the semi-final, the 2.03-meter-hen returnee Kei Nishikori had fought back in three sets.

In the doubles, Philipp Oswald and Max Mirnyi were able to celebrate their second joint tournament victory. The Austrian-Belarusian pairing beat Wesley Koolhof and Artem Sitak (Netherlands/New Zealand) 6-4,4-6 and 10-6 in the final. The duo had already left Moscow last year with the winning cheque.

For Oswald, it was the seventh title of his career, and Mirnyi won the 100th prize in a row. Final on the ATP Tour doubles title number 51 perfect – the 40-year-old had played four of these finals in the singles.
