WTA: Witthöft wins in Miami against Maria – now against Görges

Carina Witthöft (Hamburg) was the first German player to win her first round match at the WTA tournament in Miami/Florida. In the German duel against Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) the 23-year-old won 6:3, 6:4 and celebrated her fifth victory in her seventh clash with Maria, seven years older.

The world rankings-57. Witthöft only survived the first round in a main field for the second time in 2018. Witthöft had also won against Maria in Doha in February, before a round later she was defeated by Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark), who was first in the world rankings at the time. In Miami Witthöft will face Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) in round two, who, like Angelique Kerber (Kiel), had a walk-through to start.

Mona Barthel (Neumünster) had previously lost her opening match against Timea Babos from Hungary 6:7 (5:7), 3:6 in Miami. Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) will play Polona Hercog (Slovenia) in round one in the evening after a successful qualification.
