ATP: Madrid: Jan-Lennard Struff follows Kohli in round two

After Philipp Kohlschreiber, Jan-Lennard Struff has also reached the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid. The 28-year-old from Warstein defeated the Romanian qualifier Marius Copil in 1:06 hours 6:4, 6:4.

Shortly before a heavy thunderstorm hit the Spanish capital, Jan-Lennard Struff turned his first match point. One break per set was enough for the world rankings 65th to win against Copil without much effort. Madrid debutant Struff’s next opponents are Pablo Carreno Busta (Spain/No. 9) or Borna Coric (Croatia).

Previously, Philipp Kohlschreiber had already secured a place among the top 32 against Yuichi Sugita. Above all, Kohli could rely on his service in bright sunshine. He only gave four points on his own serve throughout the match and was always successful when the second service came.

Kohlschreiber, number 28 in the world, converted his first match point after 1:08 hours to a 6:4, 6:3 victory against Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain/No. 11), whom he had beaten in two sets in the quarter-finals in Munich.

Mischa Zverev (Hamburg) failed on Monday due to his opening opponent Federico Delbonis (Argentina). On Tuesday Peter Gojowczyk (Munich) will fight Spain Albert Ramos-Vinolas for the second round.

Number two seed Alexander Zverev will only play Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy in round two, who surprisingly defeated Greece’s super talent Stefanos Tsitsipas 5:7, 6:4, 7:6 (7:3).
