ATP: Kohlschreiber fails in the round of 16 in Madrid

Davis Cup player Philipp Kohlschreiber missed his first quarter-final at the Masters tournament in Madrid. The 34-year-old lost to US Open finalist Kevin Anderson (South Africa/No. 6) in the round of 16 on Thursday after 1:32 hours 3:6, 6:7 (7:9).

The man from Augsburg did not make a good start to the match, Anderson was leading 5-1 after two breaks and Kohlschreiber, who had only reached the second round in Madrid, was also trailing 3-5 in the second set. But he fought his way back and even had two set points in the tiebreak, but the South African proved his better nerves and celebrated his third victory in the third duel with Kohlschreiber.

From a German perspective, only top player Alexander Zverev is still represented in Spain’s capital. The second seeded Hamburger will meet Argentinian Leonardo Mayer on Thursday afternoon. Last year, Zverev failed in the quarter-finals.

Previously, 19-year-old Denis Shapovalov from Canada had defeated compatriot Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-4 and thus reached his second Masters 1000 quarter-finals. He will meet Kyle Edmund from Great Britain, who won 6-3, 6-3 against David Goffin.
