ATP: Borna Coric wants to be at the top: “Number one is my goal”

Borna Coric has worked her way up the world rankings with good results in the past Masters tournaments. However, the Croatian’s goal is to achieve the top position.

That was quick. A few weeks ago, Borna Coric said in an interview that he wanted to work his way up the world rankings slowly and not rush into anything. The 21-year-old’s statements are in keeping with his restrained and distinguished manner, which, however, can sometimes turn into outbursts of anger on the tennis court.

In April of this year, Coric celebrated his personal career high to date and ranked 28th in the ranking. After the Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo and Madrid, the Croatian lost twelve courts, but is in great shape and is slowly but steadily annoying the big names on the tennis scene.

With increasing success, the 21-year-old’s goals also seem to grow. In an interview with Sky Sport, Coric said: “My main goal is to become the number one in the world.” A hearty and self-confident announcement from the Indian Wells semi-finalist.

“Every athlete wants to be at the top once. I want to be at the top of tennis. I know I need luck. But that’s exactly why I play tennis,” Coric continues.

However, the NextGen Star made one thing clear: Coric is not about money. “I’m not playing for the money, but because I love it. (…) If something doesn’t work, I won’t stop. I’ll go on and fight,” Coric insisted.

The doggedness seems to come from his childhood and youth, Coric explained. As a child he was completely crazy and cried between almost every point during a match when things were not going well, Coric said. “That’s over now. I’m still a little crazy, but it was really bad back then. However, I was always fully concentrated at the beginning of the point and was actually a different person in this situation,” the Croatian explained further.

Perhaps it is precisely this madness that brings the 21-year-old to his great goal. To be the number one in the tennis world.
