French Open: Weakened Andrea Petkovic defeated Simona Halep

Andrea Petkovic has lost her duel with the world number one in Roland Garros. In the third round of the French Open, the German Simona Halep lost 5:7, 0:6, Petkovic was braked by an injury on his right knee.

Petko missed her first appearance in the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament since 2014, when she had also reached the semi-finals in Roland Garros.

Petkovic, who has since dropped to 107th place in the world rankings, had made the match against the big favourite very balanced in the beginning. The first game alone lasted around ten minutes, the first set ultimately an hour.

At the beginning, the 30-year-old kept up well, and was even able to take the lead 2-0. After a re-break, however, the German took the decisive break at 5:5, the first set gone.

Afterwards, however, she suffered an injury in her right knee. After a short medical break she was able to continue playing with a bandaged knee. A complicated tape pulled her frustrated from her body after only two games and had to admit defeat after 1:28 hours.

Petkovic last reached the third round of a major tournament at the US Open 2015. In the first rounds, she defeated Kristina Mladenovic (No. 29) from France and Bethanie Mattek-Sands from the USA in two sets in round two.

In the evening Julia Görges against the 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams (in the LIVETICKER) and Angelique Kerber against sand court specialist Kiki Bertens (in the LIVETICKER) have the chance to enter the round of the last 16.
