ATP: Florian Mayer receives last wildcard for Halle

Florian Mayer (Bayreuth) has received the third and last wildcard for the ATP grass court tournament in Halle, Westphalia (16 to 2 June). This was announced by the organizers of the Gerry Weber Open on Thursday. Previously Maximilian Marterer (Nuremberg) and Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) had already received a wildcard.

“Florian will end his career this year. We are happy to give him the opportunity to say goodbye to the audience in Halle with a final performance,” said tournament director Ralf Weber. The 34-year-old Mayer defeated Alexander Zverev in the final two years ago and celebrated the second tournament victory of his career after Bucharest in 2011. “The memories of my victory in 2016 are beautiful. It was the best moment of my career,” said Mayer.

Top favourite is Swiss Roger Federer, who is aiming for his tenth title in Halle. As in the previous year, the record Grand Slam winner leaves out the sand court tournaments completely and focuses entirely on the “green season” with the highlight Wimbledon.

Germany’s top player Alexander Zverev (Hamburg), Austria’s Dominic Thiem (No. 8) and US service giant John Isner (No. 10) have also registered for Halle as number three in the world.
