ATP/WTA-Round-up: Gasquet and Krunic win in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Barty in Nottingham

Besides Roger Federer in Stuttgart, there were other tournament winners on the ATP and WTA tour this weekend.

A combined men’s and women’s event took place in’s-Hertogenbosch this week. Richard Gasquet won the men’s ATP-250 in a French final 6:3, 7:6 (5). Chardy had already won the top seeded Adrian Mannarino from the tournament in round two; Gasquet only narrowly defeated Bernard Tomic, who had come out of the qualification, in the semi-finals in three sets. For Gasquet, who celebrates his 32nd birthday on Monday, it was the 15th title win on the tour.

Aleksandra Krunic won her premiere title on the WTA Tour at the women’s international event. The 25-year-old Serb won the final 6:7 (0), 7:5, 6:1 against Kirsten Flipkens. Krunic had won in the semi-final against CoCo Vandeweghe 2:6, 7:6 (4), 7:6 (1) and will crack the top 40 of the world for the first time in tomorrow’s world rankings.

Belgian Flipkens had to give up her double final on Saturday due to muscle cramps. “I don’t know how you did it, but the fact that you didn’t show me the pain you were in today needs a lot of respect. Many others would have rolled on the floor in pain,” Krunic paid her opponent the highest tribute.

In Nottingham, another tournament in the International Series, Ashleigh Barty lived up to her position as a favourite. In the final she beat four seeded Johanna Konta 6:3, 3:6, 6:4 – and celebrated her second WTA title. Barty will be ranked 16th in the world rankings on Monday, setting her highest position.
