WTA: Julia Görges failed early in Eastbourne

The German number two Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) failed early at her Wimbledon dress rehearsal. The sixth seeded Fed Cup player lost her second round match against Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus after 1:53 hours 6:1, 4:6, 4:6 at the WTA tournament in Eastbourne, England.

For Görges, it was his first duel against 20-year-old Sabalenka. The grass court tournament in the English seaside resort is the dress rehearsal for the event in the tennis Mecca Wimbledon (2 July to 15 July). Last week, the 29-year-old German Fed Cup player lost to Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals in Birmingham.

Second German starter in Eastbourne is Angelique Kerber (Kiel). The number four seeded former world number one will meet Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia) on Tuesday afternoon.

The seed list is headed by Caroline Wozniacki and last year’s winner Karolina Pliskova.
