The draw for the men’s main field gave Dominic Thiem a hard draw. Roger Federer has a supposedly easier task ahead of him, while Stan Wawrinka meets Grigor Dimitrov in a first-round crash.
Thiem must start against Marcos Baghdatis, who may be competing in Wimbledon for the last time in his career. In round two, the winner of the duel between David Ferrer and Karen Khachanov would wait.
In the quarter-finals, the French Open quarter-finals could be repeated against Alexander Zverev, but only if Thiem goes further than Fernando Verdasco and Novak Djokovic. The second Austrian in the draw, Dennis Novak, has a Lucky Loser as opponent with Peter Polansky from Canada.
It was much easier for the number one of the tournament, world number two Roger Federer. He will start with Serbian Dusan Lajovic before the winner of the match Lukas Lacko would wait against qualifier Benjamin Bonzi. According to the seed list, the round of 16 would see a new edition of the Halle final: Borna Coric is in the same section in the draw.
Sam Querrey, who defeated the battered Andy Murray last year, could wait in the quarter-finals before Marin Cilic would be an exciting semi-final opponent.
Sascha Zverev plays the Australian James Duckworth in the first round. Taylor Fritz would be a possible second-round opponent, while Damir Dzumhur would be a tough opponent from the third round of the French Open one round later.
Among the most interesting first-round matches are Grigor Dimitrov against Stan Wawrinka and the French duel between Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils. Andy Murray will also play Benoit Paire against a Frenchman.
