ATP: Maximilian Marterer in Umag in the round of 16

Maximilian Marterer (Nuremberg) has reached the round of 16 at the ATP tournament in Umag, Croatia. The 23-year-old won his first round match against the wildcard owner Nino Serdarusic from Croatia 3:6, 7:5, 6:3.

After the local hero took the first set from the German, Marterer turned his first match point after 2:13 hours.

In the next round, the only German starter in the 561,345-dollar clay court tournament on the Istrian peninsula will now face either eighth seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire or Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics.

The Franconian made his debut at the Grand Slam classic in Wimbledon, but was eliminated in the first round against Damir Dzumhur (Bosnia and Herzegovina). At the French Open four weeks earlier, Marterer had caused a sensation when he reached the round of 16 and only failed there due to the later winner and sand court king Rafael Nadal from Spain.
