The number 1 seeded Matthias Wolf entered the final of his home tournament at Flötzersteig on Monday afternoon with two victories within a few hours. The 30-year-old runner-up in the rankings first won the quarter-final match at his home club’s centre court against Peter Rathammer, which was abandoned the evening before, 6:1, 4:6, 6:4, before defeating the Lower Austrian surprise man and Schneider defeater Martin Mayrl of UTC Mistelbach in two sets with 6:1 .7:6. In the fight for his fourth HTT seasonal title, the local hero of SKVS Flötzersteig now has to deal with Maximilian Wild. The 18-year-old from Stockerau prolonged his current top form with two wins over Gerald Dominik and Dominik Negrin, is the only player the Flötzersteig Open 500 still without set loss, and overall unbeaten for eight games. The title decision at the simultaneous Flötzersteig Challenge will be made on Tuesday afternoon in a duel between Prater Cup Future Champion Valentin Kaftan and Upper Austrian veteran Philipp Mayer. After a wet and therefore atmospherically cool weekend, on Monday evening the SKVS Flötzersteig tennis court really got into the mood for the first time. No wonder, because one of them opened on the fourth and penultimate day of the tournament and delighted the Flötzersteig family with a successful performance. Of course we are talking about Matthias Wolf, who is the only one of the five local heroes who went into the race on the final day to be able to fulfil the title hopes of an entire club. The runner-up in the rankings, who has been struggling with minor health problems for a few days now, and who had worked overtime in the quarter-final duel with veteran Peter Rathammer of UTC Judenau on Sunday after leading 6-1, 3-1 in the meanwhile quite clearly, had to fight hard first, before he had reached the preliminary round with a 6-4 win. On HTT 500 level it was Wolf’s fifth semi-final entry in series. Two hours later Wolf had doubled, surprise man Martin Mayrl defeated with a clear 6:1 and a hard won 7:6, and reached his 12th HTT career and 5th HTT season finale.
There Wolf now has to deal with an old acquaintance. For the fifth time in the last six months, the local hero is confronted with the 18-year-old HTT shooting star of the year Maximilian Wild. The young star of TC Stockerau came to the Flötzersteig as the new Floridsdorf Open winner and extended his current top form here in Vienna-Penzing with this year’s 6th HTT finale fixed without a set loss. At first, in the round of the last eight with Gerald Dominik, the tenth in the rankings from Lower Austria declassified the young man who did not allow himself to lose a set against Rainer Klaus and Hans Kunst in the rounds before. The 6:0, 6:3 meant the seventh individual victory in a row and a clear announcement to HTT French Open semi-finalist Dominik Negrin, who secured his semi-final ticket with a 6:0, 6:1 Kantersieg over the flat-looking HTT Wimbledon winner Bernhard Scheidl in gentle gear. As a night session Wild and Negrin then offered a high-class duel at times, in which Wild could win a first rather narrow set with 6:4, before in round 2, after a 1:3 gap in the meantime, it was necessary to catch up brilliantly to prevent Negrin’s fourth HTT career final with 5 games in series.
