Serena Williams has her own TV show and explains the background of the show after the first episode. The ex-number-one talks about the birth of her daughter and the way back to tennis.
It was a special moment when Serena Williams stepped up to the microphone after the lost Wimbledon final against Angelique Kerber.
After congratulating her friend “Angie”, the 23-time Major winner became emotional and addressed her words to all the mothers you were watching: “To all the mothers out there, you can do anything. I came back too!”
This is precisely why the production company HBO secured the rights to a TV show about the life of the expectant mother Serena Williams. The first episode now ran worldwide for the first time and was a complete success.
On the show Williams explained her thoughts about her new life as a mother and an active tennis player at the same time: “I was just afraid. It was a whole new kind of fear. And tennis? I’ve never been further away from my profession than at this time. I’ve never felt so insecure.”
Before the showdown in Wimbledon, the American explained that she was in a critical condition during her birth and that her health had suffered greatly from pregnancy.
Health problems were joined by doubts about her future in her profession: “I could not escape fear. The fear that I couldn’t be in both world class – as a mother and as a tennis player. I figured the only way to find out was to just experience it. Just hit a few baseline balls and see if I still have it in me. Or maybe I would have had to look for another career,” Williams continued.
Despite all her concerns, “Mama Serena” proved that she is still one of the world’s top tennis players. After difficulties during her comeback attempt at the beginning of the year, the 36-year-old played herself in better and better shape and crowned her comeback with the Wimbledon finale.
But the best tennis player of all time still doesn’t have enough: “I have more tennis to play. I have more lives to live as a professional.”
After the TV show premiere, Williams also explained why she did the TV show: “I wanted to record it in a documentary to tell my daughter later:’Olympia, look at all these moments!'”.
As a dramatic final act of the first episode, Williams was shown on a bed to be prepared for a C-section. A perfect cliffhanger to win the fans for part two of “Being Serena”.
Daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian is now almost one year old and a real star in the social media. Baby-Serena already has 431,000 followers on Instagram and is skilfully staged by her mother. Just like Mom!
