WTA: Top seed Caroline Wozniacki pulls out of Washington at short notice

Caroline Wozniacki has suffered a setback in preparation for the US Open.

A few hours before her opening match at the WTA hard court tournament in Washington, Wozniacki withdrew. The reason given by the top seed in the US capital was an injury in the right leg. The Australian Open winner was originally supposed to play qualifier Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine.

Wozniacki has not played a match since her surprising second round finish in Wimbledon at the beginning of July against Ekaterina Makarova from Russia. The event at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington was intended as the 28-year-old’s prelude to the hard court season with the climax of the US Open (from August 27).

In New York she had reached the final in 2009 and 2014. In the tableau, Wozniacki was replaced by Lucky Loser Ysaline Bonaventure from Belgium.

Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) contests her second round match against the second seeded US Open winner Sloane Stephens on Wednesday noon local time. Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) had failed in her opening game at the $250,000 tournament in Washington.
