Somewhere Novak Djokovic had to land – Roger Federer’s neighbourhood has become it. And this could lead to an early hammer duel! The most important information about the draw of the US Open at a glance.
Novak Djokovic, the number six of the tournament and for many the favourite, could thus face the Swiss in the final eight round, a return leg of the 2015 Final and most recently in Cincinnati. Federer is number two in the world and starts against Yoshihito Nishioka. Nick Kyrgios could be waiting in round three. Djokovic will play Marton Fucsovics in the opening match.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal is top seeded and expects David Ferrer, an old friend on his farewell tour (Ferrer is playing his last Grand Slam tournament). Dominic Thiem, number nine, is listed in the same quarter, he starts against Mirza Basic. Possible round of 16: against Kevin Anderson.
Juan Martin del Potro, number three, has drawn a qualifier, in round three it could already go against the unseeded Andy Murray – the long injured Scot starts against James Duckworth.
Alexander Zverev, number four, will meet a qualifier, Kei Nishikori or Diego Schwartzman would be possible opponents in the quarter-finals, Marin Cilic one for the quarter-finals.
The hammer duel in round one: Stan Wawrinka – Grigor Dimitrov (seeded eight) – the same first round pairing already took place in Wimbledon!

Simona Halep is number 1 in the women’s competition and will face Kaia Kanepi. Serena Williams, seeded at 17, starts against Magda Linette, in round two either Carina Witthöft or Caroline Doleheide is waiting. She could meet Sister Venus (who opens against Svetlana Kuznetsova!) – and Halep in the round of 16.
Angelique Kerber, seeded on four, will start with Margarita Gasparyan (possible second round against Alizé Cornet). Julia Görges, number nine, has to deal with a qualifier, in round two she could face Ekaterina Makarova.
Possible highlight match in round one: Caroline Wozniacki, seeded on two, against a former winner in New York: Sam Stosur.
