US Open: Mona Barthel misses main field, Eugenie Bouchard prevails

Qualification for the upcoming US Open 2018 is over – with bad news for Mona Barthel. The German WTA player missed the main field with a clear defeat in the decisive match. Eugenie Bouchard, on the other hand, lived up to her role as a favourite.

Mona Barthel met the American Francesca Di Lorenzo in the final of the US Open qualification and had to admit defeat clearly with 4:6 and 2:6.

Right from the start, the world number 111 did not find its way into the match and stumbled, especially on serve. Barthel, who was favored against the world-ranked-193rd, had to recognize early that nothing was to be won on this day. With Barthel’s defeat, Angelique Kerber, Julia Görges, Carina Witthöft, Tatjana Maria, Laura Siegemund and Andrea Petkovic are six German players in the main draw of the last Grand Slam of the year.

Swiss Patty Schnyder celebrated a great victory. The world number 187 prevailed against Jessica Pegula and celebrates her third main field participation this year at the age of 39. At the Australian Open and Wimbledon the former world ranking seventh failed in the first round.

Eugenie Bouchard is also on the upswing. As expected, the young Canadian prevailed against Jamie Loeb from the USA. With a clear 6:0 and 6:3 the 24-year-old left her opponent no chance and is now fighting in the main field to return to the top 100 of the world rankings.
