WTA: Setback before the US Open: Julia Görges misses final in New Haven

Wimbledon semi-finalist Julia Görges has missed the final of the WTA tournament in New Haven/Connecticut before the US Open in New York starting on Monday.

The 29-year-old from Bad Oldesloe also had to admit defeat in the second duel of Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final of the dress rehearsal for the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, endowed with 799,000 dollars. After 1:45 hours it was 4:6, 6:7 (3:7).

Görges and Sabalenka played a good match, in which the nine years younger Belarusian remained untouchable in her service games at first. The ninth in the world rankings, Görges, did not have a single break and gave up her service for the decisive 4:6.

The number five on the seed list then lost Sabalenka’s serve in the first game of the second round, but lost the thread a little towards the end of the set. She could not use a 6:5 lead with her own service, not even a 3-0 lead in the tie-break. Sabalenka turned her first match point into victory and is now waiting for the winner of the duel between Carla Suarez Navarro (Spain) and Olympic champion Monica Puig (Puerto Rico).

Julia Görges was one of two German players in the main field. Laura Siegemund had already failed in her opening match due to the Briton Johanna Konta. Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber takes a break in the week before the US Open.
