US Open: Glosse – Drink like the pros

The heat has left the National Tennis Center until further notice. What have we learned in the last few days?

Philipp Kohlschreiber told the German radio reporter after the match against Yannick Hanfmann that he had taken eight litres of liquid. Alone in the fourth movement. The native of Augsburg was of course granted this from the heart, the success also proved him right.

But what about us, the normal mortals? The fans, the aficionados, the journalists? Three hours of active tennis, good and beautiful. But those who make a pilgrimage from Louis Armstrong Stadium to the Grandstand should definitely take a survival package with them. While the professionals get the drinks, of course, our club has to reach into the bag. Deep.

Eight litres, let’s see…

Water. Anyone who has paid close attention in mathematics lessons has a clear advantage. $6.50 for 750 ml of natural spring water imported from the French Alps according to the label? Occasion! We’ll take two, who knows how long the supply lasts. Interim results: three liters, $13.

Those who were socialized on Austrian tennis courts in the 1980s will not have forgotten that there is no better regeneration drink than a formidable mixture of Coke and beer. Here, however, we come up against our cultural limits. The extremely friendly gentleman at the kosher beverage stand doesn’t know what to do with the inquiry, but for a small protection money he moves a can of beer (473 ml strong) to 11.50 dollars, a Coke (354 ml) to 6 dollars and an empty cup as a task for mau. There are no youth memories, but at least we have almost four litres and have only spent 30.50 dollars on it. Running.

Now, however, an electrolyte shot. Mischa Zverev is just as desperate, we can’t afford our own blender, we have to resort to mass production. But good: The bottles of the power drinks are well filled with 20 oz (591 ml), we hit double again, increase our balance to as much as 5,009 ml – and yet have only put 42.50 dollars on the table. There go two iced tea bottles same still with, same quantity, same price, it is still missing scarcely two liters to the goal. And we’re chalked at 54.50.

Now we are rapidly getting tired, a double cappuccino is necessary. This does not bring us much further in terms of quantity, but at the latest now it is only possible to keep up um´s We like to discard the 13 USD, and somehow we have earned a cider now, flavor apple. I hear it’s sparkling, but it can’t get under it. With a total balance of 78 dollars, we abandon the experiment. Playing tennis is out of the question, Kohli we can’t even hold our water when it comes to drinking. Literally. But we’re not here for fun.
