WTA: Petkovic follows Lisicki to Guangzhou round of 16

Andrea Petkovic followed Sabine Lisicki into the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Guangzhou, China. After start-up difficulties, the 31-year-old from Darmstadt won her first round match against the Australian qualifier Lizette Cabrera 1:6, 6:3, 6:3.

Petkovic will now face the winner of the Chinese duel between Wang Yafan and Zhu Lin.

It was the first duel between the former ninth in the world rankings and the 20-year-old Australian. Petkovic failed to qualify at the New Haven and Cincinnati tournaments in early August after reaching the semi-finals of the Washington tournament. At the US Open in New York she dropped out in the first round.

The day before Sabine Lisicki (Berlin) had also won her opening game against Vera Zvonarewa in Guangzhou after a long injury break. The former Wimbledon finalist will face number five seeded Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in the round of 16.
