This year the second edition of the Laver Cup will take place. SPOX will tell you how the tournament came about, which players are competing this year and where the tournament will be broadcast on TV.
Tennis legend Roger Federer and his management agency Team8 founded the Laver Cup. He is to honour the Australian tennis legend Rod Laver. Over three days, six players each, representing Team Europe and Team World, will meet.
On each of the three matchdays a total of four matches (3 singles, 1 double) will be played over two sets each. Should it be 1:1 after two sets, the players would go over the match tiebreak to 10 points.
To win the Laver Cup, a team needs 13 points. In particular, not all victories are counted equally.
The tournament will take place September 21-23 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinios. Team Europe and Team World host the tournament every year. In 2017 the tournament took place in Prague. The games are always played on a hard court in the hall.
Basically, the best four Europeans and non-Europeans qualify directly for the teams. The captains can later appoint two more players to complete the teams. If a player is not interested in participating, he/she may waive this right. The best player of the World Team, Juan Martin del Potro, had to cancel due to injury as well as Europe’s Rafael Nadal.
The tournament will be shown on German television on Pay-TV channel Sky. At the same time you can follow the action in the live stream on Amazon Prime. The first matchday starts on September 21st at 10 pm German time, the following matchdays start at 8 pm German time.
Every player gets a starting bonus at the Laver Cup. How high this will be is currently unknown. In addition, each player in the winning team will receive prize money of $250,000. There are no world ranking points in the Laver Cup.
