On Wednesday Julia Görges, the number one, will enter the WTA tournament in Linz. This leads to an inner-German duel with Andrea Petkovic.
Julia Görges has been playing her Monday night in a Roman toga, not the only one. All ladies who report to tournaments organized by Sandra Reichel know that the party for the players follows a motto. At the WTA tournament in Linz a Roman evening was declared, the German number two gladly followed the call. Tournament ambassador Barbara Schett anyway.
Görges will be interested in sports on Wednesday. Andrea Petkovic from Regensburg, Germany, was drawn by lot and the two ladies would have wished for this duel a little later, both athletically and humanly. But good: Görges is in first position in Linz, Petkovic slipped into the tableau with a wild card.
Last year Julia Görges showed her best tennis in the later phase of the season and won the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai after the event in Moscow. For this event, the 29-year-old will also be represented in the field of participants this season, as of now. But after the golden autumn of 2017, Görges probably also had a trip to Singapore in mind.
Especially as the year began with a tournament win in Auckland, in the final against Caroline Wozniacki. This was followed by a solid season with another final at Charleston (defeat to Kiki Bertens) and the first semi-final at Wimbledon, where Görges lost to Serena Williams.
To strengthen Singapore’s ambitions, however, it would have required a strong appearance at the US Open. There Görges lost in round two to the always annoying Ekaterina Makarowa.
The balance between Julia Görges and Andrea Petkovic is well balanced after four matches, the last match was won by the Linz favourite in the semi-finals in Washington in summer 2017. However, it’s just three movements away – and nothing else can be expected in Linz. Finally, Andrea Petkovic has shown increasing form again in the past weeks. And also convinced in her toga.
