As an expert and tennis instructor, Mats Wilander has an outstanding eye for potential talent. A young fellow countryman of his could make his way. And with a prominent pedigree.
Björn Borg is currently not as present to the tennis fans as he has been for years: The eleven-time Major Winner was not only captain of the Team Europa at the Laver Cup, but the Borg is in fact the leading actor in a current movie about his great duel with John McEnroe in Wimbledon in 1980. If you would like to find out more about how the great Swede plays, you can do so in a cinema of your choice. Or you can view the original on YouTube.
Leo Borg, the 14-year-old son of Björn, may have done just that. But then, however, he took other examples when Mats Wilander thinks it is possible.
“He already has a few good qualities,”Wilander told the newspaper Espressen,”Good boy, good feeling for the ball, nice technique. If you look at his entire game, you will find some weaknesses, of course, but that’s normal. And he has a positive attitude.”
At the age of 14, he doesn’t feel the same pressure as at the age of 16 or 17. Then it is also more difficult to improve,”says Wilander.
And the comparison with the famous father? Leo reminds him of Björn Borg with his good attitude:”But as far as his style is concerned, this has little to do with his father”. 2017 and later, with flawless baseline playing alone, nothing can be won in top tennis. So it’s a good thing for Leo Borg that he’s taking a more modern approach. It is also advisable to study the old pictures here: Björn Borg was to be found in Wimbledon in particular, after all, more often in the offensive. And, contrary to the myth, he did not only go to the net to collect the congratulations of his opponents.
