Sabine Lisicki has another poor season behind her, injuries threw the Germans back again and again. Now a Challenger tournament in Taipei is supposed to bring some reparation to the end of the season.
Bad luck is almost an understatement in Sabine Lisicki’s case. The 2013 Wimbledon finalist was again set back by many injuries and played only 23 games in the entire calendar year.
The year began promisingly for the 29-year-old: healthy and without complaints, Lisicki played her way into the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Taipei. Then the next setback. After shoulder, knee and wrist injuries in recent years, another injury forced “Bum-Bum-Biene” to take a break once again.
Lisicki missed out on the Australian Open and only returned to the stage in Indian Wells. Under the Californian sun, Indian Wells suffered a defeat at the start of the race, and Miami suffered its next injury – hard to believe. In the third set Lisicki had to throw the towel with a foot injury and missed all tournaments until the Wimbledon opening.
Yes, there in Wimbledon, when in 2013 the star of Sabine Lisicki seemed to rise. Although the Troisdorf player lost the final, Germany’s tennis hopes were still on the way to the top. Only five years later Lisicki lost to Quali-Auftat and the adventure at old working place was over before it had begun at all correctly.
Now it will judge the last Challenger tournament of the year in Taipei. The number 229 of the world announced on its Instagram profile that it will return to Taiwan’s capital.
The Challenger Tournament in the 125,000cc category has 32 starting places and will be held on carpet. The underground was supposed to be Lisicki’s. “I’m happy to announce that I’m returning to Taipei for the OEC Open. I can’t wait to get back. I had such a great time the last time I was in Taipei and so many fans supported me,” Lisicki explained in the social media.
Tapei it should be, where the year for Lisicki had begun it should end. And to go on without injuries in the coming year, at least that is what the 29-year-old imagines. She’ll hope so for sure.
