Next week the WTA will announce their coach of the year. The list of nominees also includes two gentlemen with a strong connection to Germany.
Wim Fissette has long since found a new job, and after the surprising end of his collaboration with Angelique Kerber, the Belgian will again lead Victoria Azarenka’s practice units. But Fissette’s success with Germany’s number one could still have a positive effect: on 4 December, the WTA will announce the result of their choice as coach of the year on the women’s tour – and the coach of the current Wimbledon winner should not be missing.
Sascha Bajin, who made the leap from the hitting partner of last year’s world number one Caroline Wozniacki to Naomi Osaka’s head coach with an ease that should have made the German the favourite for the award, was no exception. Osaka has not only played herself into the limelight at the US Open, but already in spring with her triumph at the tournament in Indian Wells.
A few days later, Sloane Stephens took the title in Miami. The US Open winner of 2017 also showed her great talent with the finals at the French Open and at the season finale in Singapore – even though Kamau Murray was not at the start with the latter coach. But this is the third candidate chosen by the WTA.
Darren Cahill, on the other hand, has taken a time-out for 2019, but with Simona Halep it was enough for the Romanian’s first Grand Slam triumph in Roland Garros last season.
The remaining player is Thomas Drouet, who as coach of Timea Babos has not only rendered outstanding services to the Hungarian’s singles career, but has also led his Schützlich to the top of the double world rankings.
