Juan Martín del Potro defended his title at the Intrum Open in Stockholm against Grigor Dimitrov – Damir Dzumhur wins the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.
The finale in the Stockholm-Arena was hosted by illustrious names: Grigor Dimitrov and Juan Martín del Potro competed for the crown in Scandinavia. Del Potro was concerned with defending his title in the Swedish capital, and Dimitrov was still competing for the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
The spectators were not disappointed and the two players gave their best from the beginning. DelPo “in particular presented itself from the first point onwards and was able to develop a 5:2 lead. Dimitrov, however, stayed on the line, got a break and came up to 4:5. His Argentinean opponent, however, did not ask twice and served out for a 6:4 set win.
In the second set, the match reached a world class level. Del Potro and Dimitrov gained momentum once again and worked their way to breaking points on both sides.
The more effective of the two players, however, was the defending champion from Argentina, who immediately took advantage of his chance to take a 3-1 lead, which he expanded to 5-2 with a further break. The “Tower of Tandil” defended its title in Stockholm with a clear 6:4 and 6:2 victory and increased its trophy record to 20.
In the Moscow finals, the Kremlin Cup visitors were able to look forward to one of the rising stars in the tennis circus: Damir Dzumhur has already reached Winston-Salem and St. Petersburg the final – in Russia he captured his first ever ATP title. On the other side was the Latvian Ricardas Berankis, who surprisingly beat Adrian Mannarino in the semi-finals.
Dzumhur got the better start and secured the first round with a clear 6:2. In the second set, the Bosnian lost his thread and quickly found himself trailing. Berankis took advantage of his chances and made up for it with a clear 6:1. The fact that Dzumhur had boosted his self-confidence in the past few weeks was evident in the decisive third set. The 25-year-old remained calm and fought his way back into the game. At the decisive moment, Dzumhur managed to break 5:4 and won the title in Moscow with his own serve.
Jo-Wilfired Tsonga was able to celebrate a tournament victory in Antwerp, Belgium. The Frenchman met Argentinean Diego Schwartman in the final and was in control of the action from the outset. With a clear first leg and the decisive break in the set, Tsonga triumphed with 6:3 and 7:5 in the final.
