With Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic, two other players have qualified for the ATP final in London. This leaves only two seats open.
Whoever claims that Grigor Dimitrov has lost the match in which he showed the best performance of the year 2017 can justify this well: The semi-final at the Australian Open, the five-set match against Rafael Nadal, in which Dimitrov had the best chance to reach his very first ever Grand Slam final, remained as one of the early highlights of the campaign, which is drawing to a close end, in the form of an early campaign.
But now Grigor Dimitrov has managed to make his debut: The qualification for the ATP Tour Finals in the London O2-arena. The current number eight of the “regular” world rankings, ranking three positions better in the Race to London, can no longer be overtaken in the remaining two weeks of the tournament. Neither does Marin Cilic, the Wimbledon finalist in 2017.
For Dimitrov, as so often in his career so far, the year has brought some disappointments as well as a lot of light: After his debut triumph at a Masters-1000 tournament in Cincinnati, he had traveled to New York as one of the favourites for the US Open, but had to cancel his sails against Andrey Rublev from Russia at an early stage. Most recently Dimitrov had made it to the final in Stockholm, but Juan Martin del Potro was inferior there.
The Argentinean himself still sees little chance of taking part in London – however, the tournaments in Basel and Paris-Bércy next week would have to run optimally from the point of view of the US Open Champion 2009. Grigor Dimitrov had to cancel his start in Vienna at short notice.
Here the current status in the Race to London
