ATP: Vienna:”Kohli” in the quarter-finals

The German Philipp Kohlschreiber entered the quarter-finals of the ATP-500 tournament in Vienna after a two-stage win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Maximilian Kisanyik reports from the Vienna City Hall

After a strong first round against John Isner,”Kohli” had to prepare for a young Frenchman equipped with game intelligence. Herbert is one of the best double players on the tour and knows how to excel with his good serve and a strong volley game.

The Augsburger, however, seemed to have been well-positioned and defused the 26-year-old’s dangerous service right from the very first game and snatched the break. The 34-year-old also survived the first dicey phase of his own serve and fought off four break points. Herbert also found his way to his game and acted with more consistency.

Despite a 4:3 lead and a break in the back, Kohlschreiber was not satisfied and criticized his meeting point:”You can’t hit a ball, it can’t be,” was heard in the stands and Kohli threw his bat for the first time. When Herbert made the break to the 4:4, the mood of the German was completely upset. The Augsburg player lacked length in his basic strokes. Herbert was also not immune from mistakes and so Kohlschreiber was able to secure the first set in the tiebreak with 7:4.

The second set was then clearly in the direction of the German, who quickly moved away with 4:1 without any trouble and ended up with a solid 7:6 (4) and 6:1 victory.
