ATP: Julia Görges confidently enters Zhuhai semi-final

Julia Görges reached the semi-finals at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai: The German Fed Cup player defeated Kristina Mladenovic 6-2 and 7-6 (4).

Julia Görges’ entry into the final four was already clear after half an hour: The Porsche Team Germany player had won the first set against Kristina Mladenovic, thus securing her last open place in the semi-final of the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai. After 96 minutes, Görges had finally closed the bag – and this after she had already had a break in the second set.

Coco Vandeweghe, Anastasija Sevastova and Kerber’s Ashleigh Barty entered the final round on Thursday.

With her progress and the 240 world ranking points, Görges has also cemented her recently won top position in German women’s tennis: the woman from Regensburg, who won her 29th place on Thursday. The year 2017 will end in the WTA World Ranking before Angelique Kerber – a development that was not yet foreseeable a year ago. Julia Görges crowned her successful campaign a few days ago in Moscow with her third career title. The German Fed Cup player had previously failed in Washington, Mallorca and Bucharest in the final.

In the current condition, Görges may well feel that she is a favourite in Zhuhai, too. The semi-finals will be drawn in the course of Friday.
