“I want to play Roger again”, Alexander Zverev said on Tuesday, two days later this dream has to wait until next year. Zverev lost to Jack Sock 4-6,6-1,4-6 in the match for second place in his group and has no chance of making it to the semi-finals.
Both players had an early break, but Sock took his fourth opportunity to break 4-3. He then lost 0:40 and missed with a good serve and finished 6:4. Sock’s set win was absolutely deserved, but a number at Sascha Zverev was decisive: six break chances – no break.
In the second round, the Hamburg player did better, got a double break and won 6:1. To 14 mistakes he forced Sock to make 14 mistakes, who failed to keep the level of the first pass and committed 9 additional unforced errors.
With a great fighter’s heart, Zverev took the serve of Sock in the third round, who then shot a ball under the roof, caught a warning and a point deduction – but countered it directly and even ran away to 4:1. But Zverev stayed on and managed to equalize 4:4.
Sock managed his next service game in a relaxed manner and got through Zverev’s eight double errors to the first match point; Zverev then lost a forehand.
Jack Sock will play in the semi-finals against the first of the group “Boris Becker”: Grigor Dimitrov. On Friday, Dominic Thiem fights David Goffin in the group “Pete Sampras” for the last place in the semi-final and a match against Roger Federer.
