Davis Cup: Will Federer return again?

Roger Federer gave his Swiss fans hope for a return to the national Davis Cup team at the ATP finals in London. The Swiss also gave a daring outlook on a further participation in the Olympic Games.

“FedEx still doesn’t seem to have enough. The Swiss wants to leave a back door to his return to the Davis Cup team open. After his third win in the group stage at the Nitto ATP finals in London, the 19-time Grand Slam champion told the press:”I have not yet officially stepped down from the Davis Cup team.

In 2014, Federer won the title for his homeland against France alongside Stan Wawrinka. In the decisive match, he disenchanted Richard Gasquet in front of a strange backdrop and thus secured a next milestone in his career. After that, the “Maestro” only stepped on the court again with the Swiss flag on his chest and otherwise stayed away from the World Cup.

The 36-year-old was quoted in the Swiss news paper Tages Anzeiger:”The Davis Cup and I, that was once a love story. At the beginning of my career he was the greatest for me and the debut is one of my most beautiful memories”, Federer admitted. This debut took place in April 1999. A then 17-year-old and impetuous young professional enchanted the tennis world and won the hearts of his compatriots. Now 18 years have passed and Federer is still thinking about taking part in the traditional competition.

The Swiss man in London also took a look at an Olympic participation in 2020, and at the age of 39 he would try again to win the last piece of the puzzle in his trophy cabinet. In 2012, Federer failed in the finals due to local heroes Andy Murray and had to settle for the silver medal at the Olympic Games in London. Federer added that this consideration is still a little far away. The old master is to be trusted, because even in the present constitution he does not seem to be tired and unstoppable.
