Over the past six years, one WTA Tour player has won the Fan Favorite Award every year – that’s over now. Simona Halep can see herself as a fan favourite in 2017.
The next good news flutters to Romania. Actually, towards the southeasternmost tip of the country. Simona Halep, born in Constanta, was chosen as the favourite of the fans of the WTA tour.
It is the first award of its kind for the world’s number one. This has to do with Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland, among others: the 28-year-old seemed to be almost unbeatable in this category and won this award in the last six years.
Overall, Halep is only the fourth player who can call herself a fan favorite. Since 2009 this award has been presented and apart from Radwanska only Maria Sharapova (2010) and Jelena Dementjeva (2009) could win.
Halep rounds off an absolutely sensational year with this award. In October, the 26-year-old climbed onto the throne of the world ranking list and thus crowned the best year in her career. With aggressive and constant tennis, the Romanian played herself in the final of the French Open, Beijing, Cincinnati and Rome and went off the court in Madrid as a brilliant tournament winner. With the arrival of Halep in the sun, Halep joined an illustrious circle of female players and became the first female tennis player in Romania to become the world’s best female tennis player. This is also appreciated by their loyal fans.
Halep follow their followers around the globe and support their protégé with loud banners and songs:”Many people get up at night to watch me play. It’s nice to know that. It gives me extra motivation and makes me fight even more,”Halep explained at WTA.
This same fighting spirit is what makes the 1.68 m Powerwoman playable. With extremely fast feet and a great physique she makes up for her lack of service in some phases and acts mainly on sand with a lot of topspin and fast ground strokes.
