For Novak Djokovic, the second round duel at the Australian Open against Gael Monfils will be the first endurance test – the match tip of the day presented by LeoVegas.
In the first round, Djokovic (almost) everything went according to plan. In his first match on the big stage after a break of more than six months, the “Djoker” presented himself in top form and seemed to have no more problems with his elbow. The rearrangement of the serve worked and so the Serbian won 6:1,6:2 and 6:4 against Donald Young.
The Frenchman Gael Monfils is now waiting for the second round. Monfil’s well-established trick-shot artist and darling of the audience also won the opening round in three movements. Against the Spanish representative Jaume Munar,”La Monf” acted at will and provided a special highlight with a four aces service game.
For Djokovic, Monfils will be a real challenge because the Frenchman is in great shape at the beginning of the year and travelled to Melbourne to win the Qatar Open. Monfils also took a break from tennis at the end of the year and suffered a knee injury.
For Djokovic it will be especially important that he answers his opponent’s hard basic beatings with variation and that he doesn’t give Monfils any rhythm. If Monfils feels comfortable and plays himself into a “flow” he can beat any player on the tour. The key to the “Djoker” will be stamina and wit.
However, betting provider LeoVegas is betting on the twelve-time Grand Slam champion from Serbia and assigns Djokovic a odds of 1.18. A odds of 5.0 will be given for a win by the easy outsider Monfil.
