Maximilian Marterer fights against Tennys Sandgren to reach the last 16 at the Australian Open – the “Matchtipp of the day” presented by LeoVegas.
It was the biggest surprise so far from a German point of view at the current Australian Open: Maximilian Marterer knocked Fernando Verdasco down in five sets and booked the ticket for the third round.
For the Franconian, it was the third victory in a Grand Slam tournament at all. With a lot of courage and stoic calm, Marterer sent out positive signals throughout the match against the powerful Spaniard – with success. Now the 22-year-old gets it to do with the American with the almost perfectly fitting first name Tennys Sandgren.
In the previous round, the 26-year-old knocked out the battered and not yet fully recovered Stan Wawrinka. Sandgren played an almost flawless match in three sets and produced only a few mistakes. The strong impact and precise forehand were the key to success.
Marterer sees himself as having a great opportunity to reach his first round of the last sixteen with a major and the greatest success of his career. An advantage for the German could be that he can play another angle for his strokes as a left-handed player. His forehand can do damage and prepare the points for him. Physically, however, the advantage seems to be on Sandgren’s side. The match against Wawrinka lasted just under 90 minutes – Torture went to his physical limits in the exhausting fight against Verdasco.
Betting provider LeoVegas sees Marterer as a light favorite for the round of fourteen and writes out a odds of 1.60 for the Nuremberg player. Sandgren enters the match with a quota of 2.33.
