ATP: Stitch is accepted as sixth German in the Hall of Fame

Former Wimbledon winner Michael Stich (49) is the sixth German to be accepted into the international tennis hall of fame. Together with the Czech Helena Sukova, who had won 14 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed, the trick will be played on 21. It was officially launched in Newport/Rhode Island on July 1,2009.

“I am honored to be accepted into this elite group of tennis players, many of whom I admired and who inspired me during my career,”said Stich. Boris Becker, Steffi Graf, Gottfried von Cramm, Hilde Sperling and Hans Nüsslein had already been awarded this honour before the Hamburger.

Stich had won the 1991 Wimbledon Final against his arch-rival Becker, surprisingly surprisingly. He was denied another Grand Slam title, losing in 1994 in the final of the US Open, and in 1996 in the final of the French Open. Together with Becker Stich won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona in 1992.
