Laver Cup: All information about the Laver Cup 2017

The venue for the Laver Cup will vary in the future.For the tournament premiere in 2017, the organisers chose the O2 Arena in Prague.Next year, the event will take place in the USA.

It was officially announced that the Laver Cup 2017 will be broadcast live on German TV by Sky Sport and Eurosport.However, it is not yet clear to what extent the broadcasters report on the Laver Cup.Sky Austria has secured the live rights to the Laver Cup 2017 in Austria.

The Laver Cup is comparable to the Ryder Cup in golf.At the Laver Cup, six top players from Europe will meet the six best tennis players from the rest of the world.The Laver Cup 2016 was created by TEAM8, the management of Roger Federer, former Davis Cup player Jorge Paulo and Tennis Australia.

The Laver Cup is to become an institution in tennis and traditionally will be held two weeks after the last Grand Slam of the year (US Open).Apart from the Olympic years, the Laver Cup will take place annually and in different cities.The tournament is named after Australian tennis legend Rod Laver.

Basically, the Laver Cup is about the duel between Europe and the rest of the world.Each team consists of six top players and a tennis legend who leads the team as captain.Four of the six players from each team qualify via their ranking in the ATP World Ranking on Monday after Wimbledon.

The team captain can then assign his two wildcards (“captain’s pick”) for the remaining two grid positions until Monday after the US Open.

The Laver Cup will be played in three days and twelve matches.Each day there are three individual matches and a doubles match.On Friday and Saturday there is a day session as well as a night session.The Laver Cup will close on Sunday with a day session.

Single and double matches are played in the Laver Cup in best-of-three mode.A match win will bring one point on Friday, two points on Saturday and three points on the final day.In order to win the Laver Cup, the team needs 13 out of 24 possible points.

After the twelve matches between Team Europe and the 12:12 World Choice, there will be a decider in doubles on the last day.

In the course of the Laver Cup each player completes a maximum of 2 single games.Four of the six players in each team must compete in doubles, with each doubles combination only allowed to compete together once.

In general, two tennis legends will be selected as captains for the two teams in the Laver Cup.For the first three years, Björn Borg and John McEnroe will lead the team Europe and lead the world team.

The organizers are deliberately betting on the rivalry of the two legends during their active career to give the tournament greater significance.

The team captains determine the last two players for their team by their wildcards.They also determine who will compete for their team in singles and doubles.

For the European Laver Cup team, Captain Björn Borg has awarded two wildcards and nominated four players via their world rankings.In addition to US Open Champion Rafael Nadal, who is back at the top of the world rankings, Roger Federer, Marin Cilic and Dominic Thiem will be taking part for Europe.

Björn Borg’s wildcards went to local hero Tomas Berdych and German tennis hopeful Alexander Zverev, who was delighted with the nomination:”I am so grateful that I can play in a team with my idol Roger Federer.In addition, Rafael Nadal and many other big stars will be present.This will be an incredible experience.”

The Laver Cup 2017 will be contested by the American Sam Querry, John Isner and Jack Sock as well as Nick Kyrgios.Captain John McEnroe awarded his two wildcards to shooting star Denis Shapovalov and US open semifinalist Juan Martin del Potro.

Nick Kyrgios was not actually scheduled for the Laver Cup, but Milos Raonic canceled his participation.Thus Nick Kyrgios stepped in for the world selection.
