Dear mom,

You’re one of the strongest women I know.I looked at my daughter (Oh, my God, yes, I have a daughter, and she has my arms and legs, exactly the same strong, muscular, powerful arms.I don’t know how I’d react if she had to go through what I’ve been going through since I was 15 years old, and you’re today.

I was called a man because I was strong on the outside.I was said to take drugs (No, I was always too honest to gain a dishonest advantage). And it has been said that I don’t belong in women’s sports, but in men’s sports because I’m built stronger than other women (No, I only train hard and I’m proud to be born with this damn body.

But Mom, how did you manage not to go at every single reporter, person or hater who was too ignorant to understand the power of black women.I’m proud that we were able to show them what some women look like.We don’t all look the same.We are curvy, strong, muscular, big, small – but in one thing we are all the same: we are women and proud.

You’re so classy.I wish I could take your lead.I’m still trying, and God is not done with me yet.I have a LONG way to go, but thank you.Thank you for being the role model I needed to endure all the hardships I now regard as challenges.I hope I can teach my baby Alexis Olympia the same thing and that I have the same strength as you.Promise me, Mom, you’ll help me.I don’t know if I’m as strong as you are yet.I hope one day it will be me.I love you dearly.Your youngest of five, Serena.
