Olympia 2018: North Korea: Neureuther considers renunciation of Olympics
In view of the security situation in Korea, Felix Neureuther is considering renouncing the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang in 2018:”I am now going to be a father, and then I should drive over there with a clear conscience,”said Neureuther at the DSV Media Day in Zillertal/Austria.
In view of the security situation in Korea, ski racer Felix Neureuther is considering abandoning the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang 2018:”I am now going to be a father, and then I should drive over there with a clear conscience?”, said Neureuther at the media day of the German Ski Association (DSV) in Zillertal/Austria.
He couldn’t “stand up” and say:”Yes, great, now I’m at the Olympics and want to give it all – and one of them says that I’m bombing the country, and the other one says no, I’m bombing the country. And then one of them detonates a hydrogen bomb. No, I can’t do that with me,”Neureuther said.
He added,”There is still time, and I still have to qualify for the 33-year-old.But if it stays that way, I’d be thinking about it.This (the border with North Korea, the Red.) is 80 km away.Excuse me, but I’m driving a slalom, and missiles are flying over me, what’s going on?This is madness!”
Neureuther was angry that the International Olympic Committee and the German Olympic Sports Federation are not expressing themselves more clearly on the matter:”If they do not make a clear statement, I do not know whether I can be held responsible for this, to be there at the start and to make one on peace, joy, pancakes.”.
DOSB president Alfons Hörmann or IOC chief Thomas Bach played the topic “quite down”, said Neureuther:”I think it’s extremely unfortunate.
Basically, he sees Olympia for South Korea as a “giant opportunity, something good and positive” – but not under the current circumstances.
Meanwhile, Neureuther and his friend Bastian Schweinsteiger have joined the authors. On Friday, Neureuther also presented the children’s book “Auf die Piste – fertig los” in the Zillertal, which was published by his girlfriend Miriam Gössner (“Schneehäsin Miri”) and his great rival Marcel Hirscher (“Hirsch Marcello”) from Austria.
With the illustrated book Neureuther (“Ixi”) as well as his foundation “Beweg dich schlau” (“Move yourself smart”) wants to encourage children to take part in sport.”We have to support the children”, emphasized the multiple World Cup medal winner and added with a smile:”There are many pictures in there, that’s why the Austrians understand it” The book is available for 14,99 Euro in specialist shops.
