Ski jumping: Althaus triumphs in Lillehammer

A dream day for German ski jumping: Katharina Althaus has won the World Cup in Lillehammer, Norway, and less than 45 minutes after Richard Freitag’s victory in Nizhny Tagil, Russia, made the DSV double shot perfect.

In her second career success, the 21-year-old relegated the Norwegian Maren Lundby to second place. Lundby had won the first jump on Friday in front of Althaus.

With 271.7 points and jumps of 98.5 and 93.0 m, Althaus withstood Lundby’s attack in the second round. The Japanese Yuki Ito from Japan came in third with a clear lag.

Svenja Würth occupied a strong fifth place, Olympic champion and world champion Carina Vogt had to settle for seventh place this time after finishing third on Friday.

Juliane Seyfarth as twelfth and Gianina Ernst as 14th. rounded off the strong German performance.

Althaus, who equalled her second World Cup victory with Vogt, celebrated her first success in February 2017 in Ljubno, Slovenia. At that time she was ahead of Vogt and Würth in a memorable German triple triumph.

On Sunday the 30 best jumpers of the first two days will compete in Lillehammer from the Grossschanze. The World Cup will be held on 16/17. December in Hinterzarten/Black Forest.
